what health problems does a 9 year old male newfoundland face?
my 9 year old newfie is facing health problem after health problem. his health keeps on failing very badly and i’m frustrated at the vet’s lack of ability to provide my newfie any relief. My previous german shepherd lived till age 15 and when he was 9, he was in way better health than the newfie.
The newfie also getting blind with arthritis and so many other things, that i feel pain mentioning about it. I have decided to change the vet next week.
The three most serious current health issues in the Newfoundland breed are hip dysplasia, inherited heart problems and a relatively new issue by the name of cystinuria.

We had a newfoundland for 11 years, he died earlier this year, he had problems with his breathing, something to do with his trachea, and the muscle in his throat, he also had joint problems, however his heart was very strong right up until the end, and even when he was very poorly he always appeared happy and excited to see you, he was a wonderful dog and i miss him,
I like the personality of a newfoundland. They are so sweet.
first of all i have to say well done to keeping him for that long
)
newfies are very prone to hip dysplasia that can happen as young as 5 years old.
9 years old for a newfie is quite old (our oldest was 10 but our last one died at 7
well some common health problems for a nefie your age would be :hip dysplasia ,heart disease,cystinuria,eye problems like cherry eye/entropian/ectropian,low thyroid levels,VWD which causes clotting factors in the blood,and bloat
hope you find out whats wrong and keep him going.
if he starts to be unable to walk then consult your vet.
btw a german sheperd can live till its 17 but newfies tend to live till there 10ish
