I have two spayed female cats in their late teens who are healthy now, but I like to be proactive. I saw a friend’s cat die of CHF and it wasn’t pretty. They eat Wysong Uretic kibble (without it Tigger will invariably get a UTI) as well as some raw organic grain-free frozen pre-made food called Paw Naturaw, premium grain free organic canned cat food, and some homecooked wild fish and other raw or cooked organic grass-fed meats (i do a homemade organic grainfree mostly raw diet for my dog and give them anything out of what she’s eating that they want) they also get extra taurine and lcarnitine for their hearts, as well as a gut health mix of prebiotics, probiotics and enzymes (to prevent their touchy tummies acting up) as well as salmon oil with coq10 and 1 ml organic apple cider vinegar for arthritis. tigger also gets turmeric for her joints. One week a month they get milk thistle to keep their livers clean and they get dried organic parsley blended into their raw/canned mix to assist kidney function. I also give them bottled water only, and in a mug to encourage drinking, since they seem to like it better than a bowl. I also blend water into their raw/canned mixture until it’s a soupy consistancy. What else can I do?

m not really sure where to start.when i was 15 i started having problems in both of my wrists,so i went to the doctor and he said i have juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.at that time i thought it was just tendonitis and he was a quack.so i went around with a splint on each of my wrists for 2 months.and still i get the same pain now that i did then.i always crack them because its seems to make the pain go away but it comes right back.my knees bother me horribly at times so i pop them to try to take the pain away but that doesnt really help,so then i just sit there for a while with the pain and i keep extending it to crack it which just irratates it more.especially my left one.my back always gets stiff to the point where i cant even sit down.my right shoulder has been messed up for a while and not one doctor i have been to can figure out what is wrong.and now my left one is doing the same thing.
im only 19 and this has messed up my goals so far in life.so what should i do and whats your opinion?

I have an 18 year old Chihuahua/Beagle mix. She is in good health (although she is on Phenobarbital for epilepsy), but recently she has developed arthritis in her hips and/or back legs. It is getting worse. I can easily tell that her gait is off and she isn’t walking as easily as she could before.

There are still times when she can run around the yard and we play tug of war together from time to time as well.

With her vets permission I began giving her half of a baby aspirin twice a day, but I recently read on several sites that it can cause stomach problems and that Phenobarbital can make the aspirin less effective. Not only that, it wasn’t really helping, so I stopped giving it to her.

At her age, and with the cost of medication these days, I’m wondering if there is anything I can do for her at home, or if there are holistic ways to make her more comfortable.

Thanks for any ideas or advice

My elderly father very suddenly developed severe debilitating arthritis in his hip and knee, in July. Soon after my 21 year old niece discovered that she had mono. They shared eating utensils and glasses within the incubation period leading up to the full blown mono.

My father was in extremely good physical shape before this sudden case of arthritis, which he continues to suffer from. At the same time, he has become very tired and lost his appetite (although he contributed that to the pain medication he was given). He lost 20 pounds in 3 weeks this summer.

Today my niece’s 30 year old brother discovered he has mono although they don’t even live in the same house and it’s been 2 months since my niece had the symptoms.

Is it possible that the virus that causes mono can show up in an elderly person, as a different disease/ different form?

Note: My father had x-rays done after his problems started, that show osteoarthritis of the cartilage of his hip, but his arthritis was so completely sudden that it is hard to believe that his joint pain could be due to the osteoarthritis. My mother who is 77 is in a wheelchair due to osteoarthritis, and so I know how it usually develops gradually.

Thanks for any info anyone can provide.

My mom has had chronic debilitating pain for several years after a failed back surgery. She has been taking hydrocodone for about three years, but it never really helped all the way. She had a very bad fall, and I am to take her to see a doctor who specializes in these pumps.

If you do not mind reading a bit, I have some questions…

Are these pumps hand pumps? Like would mom be the one who pushes a button to deliver the meds to her spine?

If so, how can one guard against becoming so addicted one would push the button ALL the time and run out of meds too soon?

Or, is the pump programmed to automatically release the meds at regular intervals?

Would she still be ambulatory? Able to move around and walk and things, or will she be always flat on her back in bed because she is so doped up she cannot function?

Would she still need oral pain pills?

How extensive are the tests she would have to take? How long for results?

Does the morphine interact with her other meds; antidepressant and arthritis medication?

And last, have you have good pain relief from these things? It is worth the effort for an 86 year old woman who can barely walk to go through this?

Any website links would be helpful, too.

Thanks, everyone.
