Surgeon suspected torn cartilage so I had an arthroscope in Feb 08. Pre-op X-rays showed beginning of arthritis. After surgery doc advised that there was no tear but there were finger-like growths throughout the joint that he trimmed away. He also said back of patella very pitted so he scrapped this back. After 2 weeks, one of the wounds had still not healed and I ended up with excessive leakage, swelling and a raging fever. Had another arthroscope to clear infection and 4 days in hospital on drip. My knee has never been the same. I have had many physio treatments, different exercise/strengthening programs and even got orthopedics to try and alleviate the knee and leg pain. It is so bad that i have trouble walking, can no longer exercise and can’t sit on the floor with my children. The physio and surgeon keep telling me it will take time. Should I seek a second opinion or do I have to live with this pain?

feels like it is shattered inside. right about from my ankle down. the worse pain i have ever had. Doctor said bones look good and gout test was neg. Now he is saying to check back in a week. i can’t go another week with this pain what else could it be? So, that I can make suggestions for him to check for. I asked if it might be rhumatoid arthritis but he said it wasnt likely since i was not displaying other symptoms of the it?

Not an injury. She has Cushings disease. she is 14 years old, arthritis, etc. right now, she is vomiting, crying (whimpering), won’t eat, but still drinking water.

I need advice. I cannot walk or funtion my daily task or care fore myself when I miss meds. Also I once did miss meds and had 3 days of withdrawl symptoms etc. Thought I would die. I have had since 1982 Fibromyalgia (in the most severe cases) Arthritis degenetive disc disease, depression, insomnia, sciatica, and severe hip pain ( I have been told I need joint replacement in my hips), I take 2 antidepressants, Lyrica for nerve pain, Oxcy 80 3times daily 0cxy 5 in between . Feldene, water pill for feet swelling off and on. I can’t recall the other meds now but I was told I would have to be on the pain meds the rest of my life. What do you say to this ?

the last week or so i have been suffering from hand tingling and numbness of incredible pain to the point of almost non-functionality. it all started waking one morning and thought nothing of it cuz it had happened before if i slept on one side too long. but this pain was different in its intensity and that it lasted all day. when asking my dad he said it was cuz i had overworked it redecorating my new place(which was kinda true cuz the 2 days prior to my painful wake-up it had been sore from painting and installing a wire curtain to surround my bed with no brakes) and that it should be gone by 2weeks. the thing is the past few months though i had a few bouts of swollen and irritated eyes if i left my contacts in too long and my eye doctor said it might be a symptom of arthritis. the pain also mainly hits when its cold and damp like it has been lately but is mostly fine when either not damp or bone in cold.and though maybe unrelated i also have had unusual(brief and uncommon) chest pains within the past months ANY IDEAS?? i know i should go to a doctor but i have to wait for a day off and you all know insurance and heath-care sucks

I’m a 20 year old male that has been having annoying knee pain for a few years. I realise that nobody who answers this is going to be able to say for sure what the cause is, but at least give me ideas on what to tell the doctor when I do see him.

This has been going on for 5-6 years now, my family doctor basically writes it off as nothing, tells me I have jeuvenile oesteo-arthritis. But he lists the symptoms and they don’t fit me, hardly at all.

So the pain:

Never there in the morning.
Is at the back of the knee, on the inside, seems to come from the very prominant tendon you can see/feel in the back of most peoples legs.
Standing or walking for long periods agravates it.
Stairs up or down, make almost no difference.
Biking( I have been HEAVILY into mountain biking for years, my whole life basically) there is never any pain.
The back of my leg swells when the pain is there.
A simple tensor wrap or stretchy knee brace almost immediately relieves the pain, 100%.

My calf and back of the thigh both always have that feeling of the day after you work out. Where you need you stretch. And stretching the front of my leg (quads) relieves the pain temporarily.

The pain is a dull feeling, not around the kneecap at all, and only on the inside of the back on my knee. I can still walk just fine, putting my knee in any position but dead straight also relieves the pain. Running doesn’t aggravate it anymore than walking does.

I plan on going to the doctor with a list similar to the one I wrote out here, but basically I’m wondering if anybody can point me in the right direction with what this may be..

Here is a little background! I have 5 slipped discs – each have their own problem but here are the main things….I have arthritis in 4 of them, 1 of them has an annular tear plus I have mild scoliosis. My primary care physician had me on Lortab 7.5mg 2x’s / day – which is only helping some but could use better relief obviously. I was sent to a pain management specialist and had my appointment today where I had filled the new patient paperwork, etc.

The PA came back and examined me and went over my paperwork doing the usual routine then the Dr. came in. We discussed my problems, treatments such as epidural injections, physical therapy and medications. He had stated that I would need to submit a urine specimen before he could start me on any medication which was completely fine. When we’re finished talking, he leaves and a Nurse comes in, gives me the cup and shows me where the bathroom is, I get it taken care of, give it to the Nurse and go back to the room. The PA came in with the Physical Therapy form to take to any place

I have had serious leg pain for a few years. I finally saw my dr. about it, he did a bone scan which revealed severe degenerative arthritis and major knee alignment problems on both sides. So he gave me an anti inflammatory drug and sent me to a specialist in ortho. The ortho dr. gave me very painful steriod shots in my legs, which only made things hurt worse. Now as I sit up all the time rocking back and forth in agony, I wonder if either dr is taking this seriously enough, or if these are just the standard treatments for these problems. I went to the dr in the first place because I had tried every over the counter pain reliever for years with no luck, and worsening pain.
I mean, I understand docs are scared to prescribe pain meds, but should I just wait a few weeks for the steroid shots to hopefully work (which is unbearable) or find another dr?
I’m also only 31 yrs old, but a former professional tap dancer. That’s the reason my legs are so messed up. But I wonder if it’s because i’m young for those diseases that they are more hesitant to treat?

I have had previous problems with tendonitis when I was working. I am currently out on disability due to Fibromyalgia. I was recentyly told I may have Arthritis but my doctor never officially diagnosed this. For the last several days, two of my fingers have ached and now my mid arm as well. The fingers ache at the knucklles and the bones that lay just above them. The weather is in the 30’s and 40’s. Could the cold be making this worse? Is it more likly to be from the Fibromyalgia, Tendonis even though I am not spending as much time with repative type work? Or, is it more likly to be a symptom of Arthritis? THey are not swollen, just tender and achy in nature. Any type of remedys that will help this type of pain until a doctor can be consulted?

Sorry this may be long but I really do need some advice, or some thoughts/explanations on this.

I am 26 years old, have a 2 year old boy, and a husband.

About 8 years ago I was involved in a car crash, but was really unwise about it and did not seek medical evaluations about it. (I was in shock and did not feel any pain at the time)

Since then I have maintained a chronic pain in my left neck/shoulder area. The pain alters forms from time to time: dull aches, sharp pains, burning, tingling, numbness, weakness, concentrated nerve pain deep in my muscles, shooting pains all the way down to my pinkie.

This pain strangely enough fluctuates in levels ranging from about a 4-5 on EXCELLENT days.. some days–stretches of time it can be up to a 9. When its 9 its excruciating. I do not have to be doing anything for my pain to be effecting me. Just sitting down hurts. Needless to say it makes it difficult to be productive around the house or be active with my child.

4 years ago I went to the doctor, and she took an xray and said that she saw evidence of arthritis in my spine. Shortly after that I lost the insurance, and since then could not afford to go back to her.

I went through this discount program clinic place, and have tried to get help through them. For some reason no doctors in this program will say that I have arthritis or will even acknowledge my pain as anything other than psychological. This is increasingly frustrating as I am unable to afford any other kinds of health programs right now, and cannot seek other opinions out side this system.

I have seen more than 5 doctors, taken countless xrays, mris, cat scans, even an EMG test.
(that EMG test was really questionable though as during the beginning of the test, they said that it seemed i was “borderline arthritic” but refused to accept this as they moved the probes around untill they got a normal reading)

Is it likely that programs like these (available to low income people) are unwilling to treat people with chronic- non life threatening conditions?

I am sick and tired of being treated like I am crazy for my pain.

These doctors say that I am “too young” to be experiencing this.

anyways, after weeks and weeks of unsuccessful PT, I tried a Chiropractor. He insisted that I get another Xray, and he said that he saw something wrong with my C6-C7 disc.

How can the Chiropractor and the previous doctor see something that these doctors do not?

The Chiropractor only helps short term, no actual healing going on there, just short term relief.

I am constantly stretching, obtaining therapeutic messages, use heating pads/patches, ice, menthol cream, sleep on a good bed, stay active, work on my posture, try to eat right, exercise, taking Tylenol/aspirin/neproxin does nothing for me. Nothing takes my pain away.

I am fearful that I am flagged as some sort of drug seeker or something, but medication is the last thing I want. If I could do some surgery, burn nerve endings, do some sort of numbing shot, some sort of localized specific nerve blocker, RATHER than a life long regimine of opoid medication, and take the problem away once and for all i would in a heartbeat.

Are any of the above treatments viable as a true long term relief?
