i can push on it and i feel a pop and it goes away…the pressure and pain goes away for a few days as well but then comes back. i injured this knee a few times when i was a kid but never got medical treatment for it. today my knee was swollen and after wearing my sons knee brace for a few hours the swelling went down. has anyone else had similar? what is causing this and what is the remedy? i went to my dr about it last year for the “electric shock” feeling behind my knee cap when i go up and down stairs and without testing me he just said that its arthritis…i think it’s something more…any ideas?

Starting last November, my knee got really swollen. It was to the point where I couldn’t bend it and the pressure of the fluid caused great pain. I’ve had x-rays, an MRI, and blood tests done that haven’t pinpointed the exact cause. I’ve been seeing a rheumatologist because the doctors suspect I might have rheumatoid arthritis. The medication they gave me worked for a month or two, but my swollen knee is back. I’ve begun to wonder if the doctors really know what’s wrong. I used Webmd and researched pseudogout and gout, which also match my symptoms. Anyone have any idea at all?

She’s 15, and has arthritis. One knee is particularly bad, and it severely affects her balance (I thought she had a stroke!) Vet has given her anti-inflammatory medicine, she’s is restricted from excessive activity, and I carry (all 32 pounds of her) up and down the stairs 5 times a day. Still, if I can figure out how to wrap the knee, I think her leg would be more stable, improving both her balance and her comfort.

My knee doctor keeps talking knee replacement surgery, I think too soon.
Background as follows:
1. I had double arthroscopic knee surgery in July 2007 by my current doctor (Chief of Staff).
2. I was playing tennis 4 days after the surgery didn’t feel any pain, however, in recovery room he informed me that I had no cartilage between bone in right knee and most of the left knee cartilage was gone,
3. I have spurs, which he will leave alone cause it would hurt more than help,
4. I had a torn meniscus that the MRI and Xray did not reveal.
5. I have arthritis like a 65 year old, I was 44 at the time.
I was not having pain prior to surgery just mostly locking knee and stiffness and was playing singles tennis 4-5 days a week 3-5 hours at a time.

I woke up Jan 5, 2011 with severe pain and stiffness, was given a cortisone shot in the knee, was playing tennis 3 days later competitively with men and women 2 wks later, no pain. I still have basically only stiffness, locking, no real pain. And the stiffness is only on the inside of the right knee, which he said is the better side of that knee.

Apparently I sprained the knee in a match last week and the knee acted up again, plus I now play walking distance from the beach at night which is what I think triggered this reaction in January. I had had absolutely no stiffness nor pain prior to late Dec 2010, I played a match got really cold in Dec and then in Jan the stiffness.

Instead of recommending any other treatment, all my doctor keep talking about is a knee replacement, he did not suggest any meds, or anything for the stiffness.

I have told everybody about this doctor thinking he was the best after my first surgery, I was told maybe my recovery was due to my genes and conditioning not soley his work, I do exercise a lot, play tennis and lost over 90 pounds 6 years ago.

Do you think he is trying to push that knee replacement on me, he said I have about 3 more years. He told me in 2007 I had 7 years.

I know my best bet would be to stop playing tennis, I’m not, and he don’t recommend me stopping cause he said my knee are shot, and setting around will not make it better, but, will take away all the other good things the tennis and exercise are doing for me. I am looking into wheelchair tennis for the future, but, he keep holding up a part from a fake knee letting me know this is it no matter what in a few years. I am going to see another doctor in a few weeks. But, it’s in the same HMO.

What are the patients’ rights and is this considered ACCEPTABLE?
I have a torn meniscus, loose cartilage, and bone spurs along with arthritis in my knee and was scheduled for arthroscopic knee surgery.

I had (PAT) Pre-Admission Testing the day before and insisted on meeting the anesthesiologist and discuss the treatment plan – I have a very bad case of emetophobia and get panic attacks and get claustrophobic. So the Doctor who is the head of the department met with me and agreed to the plan similar to what has worked in three of my oral/gum surgeries – 3 ativan tranquilizers and local pain med/injections. So the Chief agrees the the ativan and say sure he’ll do a spinal and I should be out of recovery in about an hour.

Yesterday, day of the surgery, when I get checked in I see the Chief anesthesiologist and confirm the plan. About an hour later “some guy” walks up claiming to be the anesthesia doctor – I tell him no DR. x the chief is doing my operation and he says no he is. Then he says he is useing “light anesthesia” I say NO I had Ativan and and supposed to get a spinal and before I finish my sentence I am out until I half wake 3.5 hours later and get out of recovery a total of.5 hours later – no spinal.

Today I find ot he is NOT even a doctor and LIED saying I ageed to this (Of couse the first I saw him is when he lies about who the chief is and I’ve had a total of 4 ativans and am injected when I dispute his comment.
To add the first person I spoke with since said she was a patient advocate and then passed the buck. I darn near had a stoke arguing that had a right to know what he shot me up with and then my parents getting on me saying that I am ungrateful tbe I survived “unscathed” . But they are adamant that they’s want to be “under” (with a general) and get p.o.’d when I ask how they would feel if their doctors knew that and agreed but then WOKE THEM up right in time for the cutting.

I am grateful I came out ok – but I was in recovery 400% LONGER than what I was told the worst case scenario would be. And no apologies, just a bunch of lies! -
Oye, my bad typing.. Thank you for the answers.

I wanted to use Ativan, because it has worked well in 3 (extreme) gum surgeries, when I was relaxed, could respond to directions, but didn’t remember the fact that they cut my mouth and had to grind bone. I didn’t expect it to be a way to enable them to abuse my wishes.

Thanks for the advice.

my dog holly is six years old and she has had arthritis in both her knees and she has had surgery in both we give her pain medication and she still limps alot even when she hasn’t been running around anybody may know why?

and orthopedic doctor and she said it was a tear in teh quadriceps. But she also didn’;t do an MRI. My daughter is very physically active and loves to jump around , I tell her shes not supposed to until it’s fully healed. So i think she keeps reaggravating whatever injury she has, the swelling has gone down somewhat but not fully in the 2 months. SHe has no symptoms of arthritis or lyme disease- any ideas, it might be an injury that is worse than the doctor said. any idea? The doctor thinks it should be healead already, but she doesn;’t know children h ow they wont; listen and not run on it!
does it at all sound like a meniscus injury, it doesnt; hurt to walk on it but it did when she first injured it. It hurts to stretch it.

Hello. I am 15 years old, and recently I started having knee pains in my right knee. It was only pain at first, no swelling. But after a couple days, my knee grew to the size of a softball. I saw my doctor today, and because of some other symptoms he wants me to see a rhuemetologist to check for lupus and arthritis. He also said that they may want to ‘aspirate’ my knee, or drain it. Has anyone ever had this done? If so, how painful is it? Thanks for the info!

At age 68 it appears I am developing early symptoms of arthritis. Right now it is only affecting my knees, mostly my left knee. The pain is not severe, nor is my mobility affected. Walking and activity seem to help.

I have used a topical ointment at night to apply heat and ease the pain and it seems to help me sleep better. My doctor says to take a non-aspirin pain killer if the pain is severe, which it hasn’t been so far.

I am interested in any information that will help me manage this symptom of (groan) old age (there, I said it.) I expect over the years it will get worse. Can I prevent that? How should I deal with it?

I would prefer not to ever undergo knee replacement surgery.
You didn’t offend me, but I am a former smoker of tobacco and I don’t want to smoke anything again, ever. I would consider a pain drug that used the active ingredient in marijuana if such a drug were available without smoking it, however I don’t think the pain is anywhere near that severe yet.
