My dog got hit by a car. I wanted to know if the glucosamine would help prevent arthritis. He broke his pelvic bone and his femur bone. Does the human supplement and dog supplement have the same ingredients?

My dog is a Chesapeake Bay Retriever and he is 7 Y.O. I would like to, if possible, prevent him from from getting arthritis.

I’ve been reading a lot about glucosamine and people giving it to their big dogs or older dogs with arthritis. I have a 1 1/2 year old yorkie poo, she doesn’t seem to have any joint problems. Should i give her glucosamine as a preventative measure or is it not even needed?

We recently bought Iams dog food with glucosamine in it to help her arthritis in her back legs. How long should this take to kick in? I really would love to take her to the dog park because she loves it there, I just don’t want to take her until the glucosamine kicks in.

I am not taking any drugs or supplements at this time, and am experiencing a flare up with my RA. Would it benefit me to take glucosamine sulfate and how will it help me? Are there any negative effects/side effects from taking it?

Thanks

Most pain relief creams, etc. target the muscles, rather than the nerves that are affected by osteoarthritis. I have heard that glucosamine may be helpful in treating arthritis. I am not looking for a cure, just pain relief. I am currently taking high doses of Ibuprofen, which can cause liver damage. I would rather take something that targets the source of the problem. Has anyone taken glucosamine and had positive results for back pain relief?

My own experiences have been positive, and I’m not suggesting there is any problem with it. I’m just curious about others’ experiences. Would be kind enough to answer these questions:

Did your doctor recommend it you?

Has it relieved your pain?

Has it prevented further deterioration?

Has it had any harmful effects? (apart from the expense!)

How long have you taken it for?

Were you aware that it has not been clinically tested by the FDA?
Thanks very much, Gail! and I’m glad you’ve got relief from your pain.

She has arthritis….she can walk that good….if i give her that stuff…will she start walking again? Shes a 14 year old boxer….will she ever walk again???

My 9 year old dog has arthritis. I’m going to start giving her glucosamine to help. She’s about 104 pounds and the glucosamine I have is Glucosamine HCl, 1500 mg per tablet. My vet said one per day would be fine, but I also read that doubling the dose for the first 1-2 weeks helps. So would it be okay to give her 2 tablets per day instead of 1? Or would that hurt her?

Noone seems to be sure about whether glucosamine really works or not. Some say it’s just the placebo effect.
Some say it only helps ease the pain of arthritis, some say it heps cure it. Some say it also helps tendon pain too.
What’s YOUR experience?
