I raw feed my dogs but they eat mostly pork because it’s an inexpensive red meat and they can eat the pork bones (they can’t eat through the beef bones) I try to buy other red meat when i can but their diet is probably 85% pork, 10% chicken or turkey, and 5% red meat other than pork like beef heart, veal ribs, ox tail, lamb when i splurge.

so I thought of supplementing with Nupro, and asked on the yahoo rawfeeding group. They said i’d be over dosing my dogs on vitamins and they don’t need any supplements besides omega 3 oils (which my dogs already get)

for those who raw feed your dogs, what do you think? Is a mainly pork diet good enough? I calculate their daily nutrition needs for a month and they don’t have deficiencies with what they eat but most raw feeders i know are feeding more variety like buffalo, venison, rabbit, goat, etc. and I just can’t afford those meats on a regular basis.

I had been feeding ostrich for a few months but raw feeders say mammals are better to feed than birds.

what do fellow raw feeders think please i’d appreciate your input.

——————————————

glucosamine question:
Is it wise to give a dog who is 1 year and a few months a glucosamine supplement? he’s very active and 65+ lbs. he runs every day for at least 1 hour. i heard glucosamine can be given to young dogs as a preventative for arthritis. is this true?
THANK YOU!!

I have a 6 year old Golden Retriever mix and she has just recently started going gray around her snout. It’s a pretty good patch under her chin and around her nose. One of my friends told me this could be a sign of illness but I have never heard of this and nothing turned up when I searched for info on such a thing.

My dog is decently healthy. She does have arthritis and a heart murmur but she has recently gotten down to a very healthy weight and she is a very happy girl. She will be going to her vet in a month for a checkup regarding some changes we’ve made with regards to her arthritis and the heart so I’ll be sure to mention the graying to the vet but I just wanted to see if anyone had ever heard of a graying muzzle being related to illness. I still consider her a young dog.

Thanks in advance.

i just got her a while ago and she absolutely loves my other dog who is about ten years old she sits there and will lick her on the face and feet and play with her and run circles around her. Of course the ten year old [heather] just thinks that the new dog is an annoying puppy. they were getting along great. every day i would make isabella ( the new dog) sit and wait while i gave heather her food then i gave isabella hers this works great. When they finish they just get up and lick each others bowls and go to sleep together. but i came home today and i was looking for this large container with food ( its a big food storage box and it is sealed) we have had it out for months now with no problems. so im outside in the pitch black trying to look for the food and i see the dogs run to this pitch black corner to get the food i light up the way with my phone light and i see them eating bits of food off the ground and an empty food storage bin then heather gets a bit too close and isabella corners her and grabs her by the neck and growls and shakes her around ( this dog is ten years old and has arthritis in one leg so you can understand why im worried) its dark and i cant see so i am yelling really loud and my step dad comes out side and separates them with a broom turns out she just grabbed the skin and didnt hurt her but it was the most aggressive i have ever seen her. this is not the first time either she used to growl at other dogs she saw when i was giving her a treat or growl at heather when she got to close to food but never this bad.Plus right after the fight they acted like nothing happened and they were getting a long fine. what are some good ways to get her to never do this again.

and btw i adopted this dog from a local shelter and the day before i adopted her they found her on the street tied up and she was skin and bones( if that helps)

im going to call the guy from the shelter tomorrow and tell him about what happened but its too late now to call him

My dog is having trouble lately walking up stairs and jumping on couchs and such. I notice her hind legs are stiff when she walks and she wimpers when trying to walk up the stairs, eventually succeeding though. She is a husky terrier mix, turning 7 in a few months. She usually lays around all day apart from some times when she’ll play with our younger puppy. Is this just aging, arthritis, or is it the inactivity? What can i do to get her back to her limberness?
Its a female btw.

My yorkie was limping last night but only for a few minutes (once in a while he does this- the vet says it is due to bad back legs from old age).

Today he could not walk- AT ALL. We took him to the vet and they took x-rays and said he has arthritis in his hind legs and his knees in his back legs are inflamed (due to old age- he is 11 years old) and gave him a supplement for his joints and an anti-inflammatory liquid that we have to squirt into his mouth. His front legs are fine but both back legs are bothering him (it seems one worse than the other but both are problematic) It doesn’t seem to be working yet. He still can’t walk. The vet said it may take a few days to work. The problem is he can’t just be immobile for a few days. I’ll bring him his food and water but the problem is he isn’t going to the bathroom- he won’t go if I hold him up I know he has to go because he drags himself over to the newspaper (he’s paper trained) and tries to stand up. I’ll hold him up but he still won’t go. Is there anything I can do for pain relief for him until the medicine starts kicking in? Thanks.
He did give me metacam but he said not to give it to him until tomorrow because we gave him Bayer baby aspirin this morning (however that was 12 hours ago….I don’t know if I should just give him the metacam or just get him something without side affects (like medication like metacam) for today since he already had the baby aspirin and the vet said to wait until tmrw for the metacam since he had the baby aspirin today.
