I have a 13 year old english shepherd that has been eating purina pro plan for seniors. I am not sure how long since I just started caring for her, but I was wondering if I could switch her to a more organic diet with less carbs and maybe that would help her feel better. She is obviously older and moves slow as well as suffers from arthritis. I didn’t know if there was a dog food out there that might improve her quality of life. If not then I won’t change it since she is used to it already.
So far very helpful, didn’t really have a specific reason for higher protein just seemed to be what the more or whole organic foods have. Everyone I know has a different opinion about food for their dogs so in the end I thought I would post to get other opinions and I am glad to see some from DVM’s with answers too. I will ask her vet when we see her next.
We have a dog (an alaskan malamute). Its my parent’s dog. Here’s the deal. She is about 12-13 years old and has a hard time getting around (she has really stiff joints). My dad has been giving her aspirin to help relieve her arthritis. Is this a safe thing to do?
Second..he tends to add a decent amount of salt to her food as well. I really have no idea why. All I know is that the dog is really thirsty after she eats. How bad is a high sodium diet like that for the dog? She does seem to really like it but like I said she gets really thirsty.
Hello everyone. I’ll go ahead and dive right in.
Recently, we took my big nine year old chocolate lab to the vet. They said he was at least fifteen pounds over weight, which we didn’t know, and we should put him on a diet. They didn’t give us ideas on how to put him on a diet, and we can’t take him for walks because he has arthritis. We also have two other little dogs, (Shih tzu’s, one is two years old the other is four) so we’re not sure how to make sure all of them eat. We don’t have time to monitor every time they eat for obvious reasons, so suggestions would be appreciated greatly. Thanks in advance.
For extra information, we usually keep the food bowl out at all times so they can just eat when they want. Should we change this, too?
How much are we spending on healthcare to treat diet-caused illnesses?
From the book Eat To Live by Joel Furhmen, MD:
..”People are completely unaware that most illnesses are self-induced and can be reversed with aggressive nutritional methods. …The medical-pharmaceutical business has encouraged people to believe that health problems are hereditary and that we need to swallow poisons to defeat our genes. This is almost always untrue.
“…My clinical experience over the past ten years has shown me that almost all the major illnesses that plaque Americans are reversible with aggressive nutritional changes designed to undo the damage caused by years of eating a disease-causing diet. ….These conditions…can be effectively prevented or treated through superior nutrition. As their medical problems gradually melt away, patients can be slowly weaned off the medications they have been prescribed.”
“Dietary-Caused Illnesses with High Prevalence”:
–acne
–appendicitis
–atherosclerosis
–diabetes (adult)
–fibromyalgia
–gout
–high blood pressure
–irritable bowel syndrome
–macular degeneration
–sexual dysfunction
–allergies
–asthma
–constipation
–diverticulosis
–gallstones
–headaches
–hypoglemic symptoms
–kidney stones
–musculoskelatal pain
–stroke
–angina
–arthritis
–colonic polyps
–esophagitis
–gastritis
–indigestion
–lumbar spine syndromes
–osteoperosis
–uterine fibroids
“Not only are common disorders such as asthma associated with increased body weight and our disease-causing diet, but in my experience these diseases are also curable with superior nutrition in the majority of cases. Asthma is an exampleof a disease considered irreversable that I watch resolve regularly. My patients routinely make complete and *predictable* recovery from these illnesses, predominantly through aggressive dietary changes. …Diseases that are considered irreversible I see reversed on a daily basis.”
I just started this diet, and here is my menu for the day:

Vitamins? Probiotics? Enzymes? Oils? Flower Essences?
What brand do you prefer? Missing Link? Dinovite? Dog Gone Pain?
Why do you supplement with what you do? Coat? Arthritis? Anxiety?
My dog’s are on a raw diet so I guess you can say I supplement alot.. I’ve used Flax seed, salmon, and olive oil – mostly to up the fat % of their meals (makes coat beautamous) They get live culture yogurt (For probiotics and GI health) I’ve been looking into powdered supplements but haven’t found any that I like yet. – wanted just an all around good multi-vitamin. I also use rescue remedy on a regular basis for my shy dog and my older dog gets Dog Gone Pain (The BEST joint supplement I have ever found!).
Ok I’m an American pig.
I eat cheeseburgers on white bread.. I eat deli meats on white bread.. I eat pizza on…you guessed it, white cooked dough (white bread!) I drink about 1 pot of coffee and 1 – 2 liter of coke a day. I rarely drink water, never eat anything green and have meat AT LEAST twice a day for a meal. I’m starting to get arthritis already, and am constantly feeling tired. I’m pretty sure my diet sucks, but as a child and young adult, my parents forced me to eat decent…alas after moving out from them up until now (now 35) – I have been eating what tastes good more or less. I’m wondering if there are dos and donts as far as food goes, and where I should start as far as improving my diet. My grandparents all lived to a long age and ate like I do. My 92 year old grandfather ate a box of cookies a day. So I wonder how much diet really affects us? Suggestions? Comments? Web site links!? I don’t drink but I do chew snuff, quit cigs.
I’m 6′ and 185#’s.
Two really good answers there. Very good. I’m surprised how many people say Cola and Coffee actually lessen ones energy.
Thanks, I don’t know who to pick for best answer as they were both great..
