my dog is sick and if she doesn’t lose Weight ……..?
my dog is only 6 years old. she has doggy arthritis ( don’t know the real name ) if she doesn’t lose weight they might need to put her down. she can’t go running because she has arthritis. how do i handle this
I would look into a specialty food for adult dogs that need to lose or manage a healthy weight.
Put her on a weight management food and supplement with low cal treats like canned green beans….there used to be something called the ‘green bean diet’ for dogs, that some people still swear by today.
If she’s too arthritic to run, consider taking her for daily swims….this is wonderful exercise for dogs like yours. There are even vets who offer hydrotherapy now…but if you don’t have one near you a pool or lake , river or ocean will do. Just be careful in any pond or lake that it’s safe for swimming – many non-tidal waters can be dangerous with high bacteria levels and other microscopic ‘cooties’.
Well now. First time I ever heard a dog having to be put down because it was fat.
Have you discussed this with your vet? There are medications for her pain and lubricants for the joints.
There is also low fat/calorie dog food.
First thing is a vet visit to determine what medication she needs to be on and have a full blood panel done. There could be a reason for her obesity in the way of disease otherthan over eating. Cushing’s Disease is one and thyroid problems can contribute to the weight.
Once you have ruled out any physical problems, have some good pain meds you just need to start her on a strict diet with no treats or people food.
The weight will start to come off. Then, once she gets to a certain point you will be able to walk her.
I adopted an 8 year old Dachshund 6 years ago. He weighed 37 pounds. He now weighs 19. It took about 3 months.
It CAN be done.
i seen the guy on telly putting the dog on a thread mill slowly also change the diet of your dog ask your vet for a good food for the dog the thread mill is not so severe on the dogs joints and it helps to keep him moving good luck
