My dog cries while trying to get up in the morning?
My 8 year old lab has been crying in the morning while trying to get up. It only seems to be a problem when he sleeps on his side and tries to get upright. I also noticed he will wimper a little when he tries to pick up a dog treat from the floor – but no wimpering if I hand it to him so he doesnt have to bend over. He seems to walk fine without limping and he seems fine otherwise but it is heartbreaking to see him crying in the morning. I had thought maybe his leg was falling asleep – but would a dog cry about that? Maybe arthritis kicking in? Please help as we are financially struggling right now and was hoping to avoid a costly trip to the vet.
Thanks for all the responses – keep them coming! I can add that he has gotten plenty of excercise over the years and he is happy and fine once he’s up off his side I just noticed the process of him getting off his side is paingul and picking things up from the floor hurts him. God bless all of you!
Well, maybe he is depressed, (it only happens with stressed animal) You may take it to the vet.
Dogs do get arthritis, and especially that bred and at that age.
I would say that a trip to the vet would help, and I hate to see any dog suffer.
Without taking him to the Vet there really is no way of knowing what the cause of his whimpering is…but to HELP your DOG…I would suggest helping him get up…maybe make his sleeping area a little more comfortable with more padding & raise his food/water dishes up off the floor so that he doesn’t have to bend down to eat..stop feeding him the treats on the floor as well.
might be arthritis or spondilosis. normally these can be treated easily for years with somthing like metacam. around 7 quid+ lasts ages if u just give it wen he needs it most.
give him a good bed , n get him to the vet. my lab 12 now has had it a while. but runs around like a pup only needing the med wen its cold or he has done to much.
they just get stiff. but dont leave it coz u’ll be heart broken if its gets much worse n he starts wetting himself coz he doesnt want the pain of getting up
Without seeing your dog, (or being qualified!!) I’d guess at it being arthritis setting in. Don’t panic, although it obviously can’t be cured, there are supplements to be given, to help control this, and obviously painkillers if he really needs this on occasion. Rather than rush to the vet, if funds are tight just now, try getting him onto some glucosamine tablets (or combination with this) and see if it improves. Don’t over-exercise him while he’s suffering – from my own experience with this, damp and cold weather brings this on. Keep him on some soft bedding, and warm, and try not to allow him to jump. However, if this is arthritis, don’t stop exercising him completely – keeping going actually is better so he doesn’t completely seize up.
Unfortunately he if is suffering pain, you may need to see your vet, to confirm this is what’s going on, and to get him on proper painkillers.
Probably arthritis but you need to see the vet for a proper diagnosis and appropriate medication.
he is in pain, can’t you tell. No one can tell you what is wrong with your dog, only a vet can tell u for sure. The only thing I can tell u for sure is that he IS in pain. If you are cash strapped try to find a low cost place that can help u, I don’t know where you live but here in NY where I live there are several places. Good luck and please help him, he’s in pain, poor dog.
It sounds like early arthritis. Sometimes a sign a dog has not had sufficient exercise. The joints are getting clogged with deposits that have not had enough chances to wear out. Try walking him longer or more often unless he tires for a few weeks. Play ball a few minutes a day. It shouldn’t hurt and his condition might improve. Keep it up if he seems better.
If he has difficulty standing up in the morning you can loop a towel under him right in front of the hind legs and help lift him into a standing position. Given his age it probably is arthritis in the vertebrae and/or hips. My dog was 12 before this really set in; Adequan shots given every 2 weeks by me helped tremendously. It’s an RX product bought from your vet. There is an herbal supplement by Nature’s Sunshine that I used for years to keep my Aussie who had Lumbar Sacral Syndrome out of pain and walking. It’s called “Joint Support”. It’s a mixture of herbs that are known to have antiinflammatory properties. He tolerated it much easier than he did Derramax and the other NSAIDS commonly used right now.
