Is royal canine good for my dog and cat?
My dog is a senior with arthritis, and we are going to get him the Royal Canin Aging formula. I looked at all the indgredients and there are no by products and hardly any fillers (there is corn gluten) but it has glucosamine and I think it will be very good for my dog. I am feeding him Ol Roy right now and it is a disgusting. I took him to the vet today and they said he needs a new brand, and Royal Canin would be good. I also like Innova, but you can’t find that easy, and we don’t wanna drive a lot for a bag of dog food :/ . Also my cat eats Iams and that sucks too, so I want to switch her to Royal Canin. I know it isn’t the BEST brand, but is it better than Iams and Ol Roy?
here is the website for the royal canin aging formula for dogs.

I would switch to Royal Canin. I never used ol roy but I know that is the worst food to feed a dog, you are better off giving your dog table scraps instead of ol roy. Ol roy to me is generic dog food.
Dog are not true carnivores, because they can produce the essential
amino acids and do not have to ingest them in their diet. Cats are true
carnivores.
Cooked grains are nearly 100% digestible for dogs. There really isn’t a
lot of question about this based on the results of feeding studies. I am not
sure why people come to the conclusion that grains are not good for dogs.
Although meat is a source of protein, it has very low levels of calcium, a mineral our pets require for proper bone and tooth development. Calcium also plays an important role in blood clotting, muscle contraction and transmission of nerve impulses. But simply supplementing with calcium won’t work. Mineral nutrients are interrelated. Calcium and phosphorus have a scientifically established relationship in the formation of bones and teeth, provided a proper balance is maintained. This balance is usually not present in meat. If large quantities of raw meat are fed over time, skeletal problems may develop.
Liver is often thought of as a “healthy” meat because it has a high level of Vitamin A, a fat-soluble vitamin that is stored by the body. And for humans who eat other things as well, it can be healthy. But when liver is fed to pets in excessive quantities over a period of time, Vitamin A toxicity can result. This can lead to improper bone development, lameness and bone decalcification.
Raw meat carries the threat of bacteria and parasites, including salmonella. The risk of salmonellosis is always present when pets are fed raw meat diets. Certain species of tapeworm can be found in raw meat and passed on to a pet who ingests the meat.
Raw meat diets do not replicate the diets of dogs in the wild. While it’s true that dogs consume muscle meat when they eat wild animals for survival, they also consume the bones, intestinal contents and internal organs, which come closer to providing a complete and balanced diet. Wild dogs are also known to eat grasses and other vegetable matter.
By-Product… Secondary products produced in addition to the principal products.
Meat By-Products – the non rendered (uncooked), clean parts, other than meat, derived from slaughtered mammals. It includes, but is not limited to, lungs, spleen, kidneys, brain, livers, blood, bone, partially defatted low-temperature fatty tissue and stomachs and intestines freed of their contents. It does not include hair, horns, teeth and hooves
Conclusion is By products are a good source of nutrition for dogs.
According to RSPCA website roughage is essential for proper bowel function
Nutrition
Dogs require a properly balanced diet for health. This diet should contain:
Protein: to build the body;
Fats: for skin and coat health;
Carbohydrates: for energy;
Minerals and vitamins: for good bone development and healthy tissues.
Roughage is essential for bowel function.

I don’t like the fact these grain free diets and stuff haven’t been out that long. So until there proof that there better then the Science Diet, Purina, Proplan, Royal Canin and Advanced, then i am not changing. Stick with something that tried and true and not made up in someone kitchen.
Why I don’t like the natural pet foods are Avocado, Alfalfa, Onions, grapes and Marigolds are toxic to dogs-HUMAN FOOD IS NOT NECCESSARILY SAFE TO FEED A DOG! ALSO SOME OF THE FORMULARS ARE FAR TOO HIGH IN PROTEIN that cause excessive strain on the kidneys and lead to early kidney failure! There just hasn’t been enough research on these foods.
Puppy-28% protein 17% fat
Adult dog- 18%protein 9-15%fat
Performance-25% protein 20%fat
Racing Sled dog-35% protein 50% fat
Lactaing dog-28%protein 17%fat
Pregnant and lactating dogs may need to be fed puppy chow to give them the necessary protein. Sick, weak, and debilitated animals also need extra protein. Animals with kidney disease may need to be on a protein-restricted, but high biological value diet to lessen the effects of the kidney disease.
Royal Canin is a good food! It was one of the foods recommended to my dog. So it has to be pretty good!
I like the fact it is breed specific formula, that to me make it better than the other brands, developed to each and individual dog breeds, i also like the other options too such as the age care, and the ligh option!
NOTE; Dog Food Analysis Company is RUN BY SOMEONE WHO DOES NOT HAVE A DEGREE IN DOG NUTRITION!
Orijen has a bone problem
I go by what I have experienced: 15 years ago I fed my babies Pro Plan and they all lived past 12 and one til nearly 17. Then I switched to very ultra premium foods with a lot of fancy holistic ingredients and guess what? My last 3 dogs didn’t make 10 years old. We had anal gland problems, early kidney disease, seizures and many more ear problems. After I’m finished with my current bag of holistic food I’m going back to good old basic pro plan laced with a little of our dinner leftovers

A few weeks ago we had a litter eating Merrick Puppy Plate, as I can only find Purina One puppy in the 4lb bag around here. I’m not one to be impressed by ingredients alone. However, the vitamin premix & chelated minerals in Merrick looked excellent & I was sure this was a good food. I started the bitch on this two weeks before her delivery and everything seemed to be fine. Pups were whelped without a problem, yet they were all, every single one of them, severely hypoglycemic at birth! Thank God I had a jar of molasses on hand to perk the babies up or I have to wonder if I’d be able to revive them. I have had some listless pups before, but this is the first time I’ve ever had to treat them for hypoglycemia. This was an omen of what was yet to come …
Within 24hrs, the pups were struck with a horrible case of diarrhea, as was our bitch. Her stools were sticky & copious. The babies were rapidly dehydrating, despite supplementation. It took round the clock supplementation and a bland diet for the bitch coupled with kaopectate & amoxicillin for momma/babies to turn the tides and finally get weight on these babies.
About a week later, everything seemed to have calmed down. The dam’s diarrhea had stopped, but her stools were still sticky. Then I noticed SCABS, yes scabs, on the pups!!! Two had only a few, but the two smaller ones were covered in them. They were thick and almost like brownish dandruff. It was reminiscent of cradle cap in a human baby. I have NEVER seen the like, or heard of such a thing in a pup. Now, the pup who was affected the worst also had a hot spot, and I know that if an adult dog has a hot spot, it’s usually diet related …
That prompted me to check the bag of Merrick for it’s Omega 3:6 ratio … well guess what? This wonderful holistic food had NO omega 3 fatty acids! I also suspected that the canola oil may not be bioavailable enough to the pups so switched them to Purina One puppy food. There was an IMMEDIATE improvement. I would not have believed it without seeing it, but after *one meal* of the Purina, the bitch had DOUBLE the milk! After 24hrs, the pup’s coats were 50% shinier and the scabs did not return! This was approx 10 days ago, and the worst affected pup is now totally healed – YAY!!! Their coats are thick, shiny and their skin is now healthy. The bitch’s stools are firm.
I mean this when I say it. I WILL NEVER SWITCH MY HOUNDS FROM PURINA EVER AGAIN.

Royal Canin and O’l Roy are two of the worst crap dog foods around. Here is a site that will show you which dog foods are the best and the worst. I suggest that you get any one of the dog foods that are top rated.

Most of grocery store dog food formulas, like IAMS, Pedigree, Science Diet, Purina,and etc contain “meat and bone meal” which has been known to contain dead dogs and cats that were euthanized in animal shelters. Their bodies are picked up and bought by the truck load by “rendering plants” , that also pick up road kill, dead live stock, and etc. They are shredded, and boiled. They skim off the fat on the top of the “soup” and collected it and sell it to pet food companies as “animal fat”, the rest of the animals’ remains are crushed up, dried and sold to dog and cat food companies as meat and bone meal.
You can read more about it here.

Here is an article where the owner of a rendering plant talks about it. He says that cremating the dead shelter animals would cause pollution, and that rendering them is good.
