15 years? it’s probably time to let her go, yes a vet can help put her down, sounds like it’s time.
Sorry.
it would be best to put her down. she has had a long life. dont let her suffer anymore because she is in pain. do the right thing
It’s NOBODY’S business to tell you that it’s time to put your dog to sleep! Shame on them for suggesting it! They don’t know your dog’s history, what meds it may (or may not) already be on or any other aspect of your dog’s health.
YES! A good veterinarian will help to guide you to the decision that is in your dog’s best interest. But I worry from the way you phrased your question (“Would a vet be able to help?) that you don’t take your dog to a vet. If this is the case, you need to make amends in a big hurry!
Yes, fifteen years is very old and yes going off feed suddenly is a worrisome sign. But if a good quality of life can be achieved by proper diet, added comfort, good veterinary care, safe and tolerable drugs, including prescription as well as nutraceuticals that can help the arthritic dog, then there’s no reason not to try them, only except if you cannot afford to do these things. If you cannot afford this course of action, then you must not allow your dog to suffer. And you know what that means. This is a decision for you and your veterinarian, not online kibbitzers!
I agree with Agouti.
It does sound like you have consulted with her vet about her condition, or a course of treatment that would best serve her. That is step one. If you currently are taking her to a vet, and do not like their suggestions, take her somewhere else for a second opinion.
Secondly, at her age, she should be on some supplements like glucosamine to help with her joint health. It is a safe and effective supplement that may have aided in this disposition.
I am sure she has lived a very happy life but she is now depending on you more than ever!
