Is it normal for older dogs to poop inside?
My dog is 12 years old and he is in pretty bad shape. He has arthritis and hasn’t really been the same since his brother died 4 years ago.
Lately he has been pooping where he lays down. He doesn’t act like he wants to go outside or anything. Is it the same kind of thing as when people get old and need to wear diapers?
well he is very old and probably doesnt have energy to move anymore.
p.s: thnks to whoever voted (N) for me.
im just tellin the truth. so w.e
aww that’s sad…yes he most likely hurts to much at
times to get up and go out….if its cold where you live
he might hurt from his arthritis more now in the winter.
Or maybe he cant hold.
bring him to the vet..he sounds depressed
It’s called incontinence. Your dog may not have the muscle strength anymore to control his rectum, or the arthritis may be bothering him to the point where he simply does not want to get up to defecate.
It’s time for a trip to the vet. Pain relievers can be given for the arthritis, and some medications can help improve incontinence.
My dog is around the same age and he’s starting doing it inside aswell. Maybe he can’t hold his bowels as he could before, so take him out often, to stop him doing it inside.
Also, for his arthritis, try giving him yumove tablets, i bought them for my dog and they really helped. They’re about £12 for 60 tablets from the petshop.
He probably is unaware that he’s even doing it. Incontinence is common in older dogs, there may be medications you can put your dog on to help him, or his sphincter may just not work anymore. Diapers, while messy, are a good idea.
hes one old dog he going to die he doesn’t have energy to get up give some dog diapers
Yes, basically. Old dogs can’t really feel or control their bowels anymore.
His arthritis is making things difficult for your dog and obviously it is painful for him to move around too much. I think he just finds it easier to just poop where he is. Have you taken him to the vet to get some medication to ease his pain, just lying around all day and not wanting to do anything is a good indication that your dog is in pain, you need to think about how you can help your dog to be more comfortable and visit the vet and discuss what options you have to help him.
If yours saying he is pooping when he is laying down then he is getting sick. he is an old dog and it sounds like he is dieing and if he is I’m sorry.
He probably is incontinent. It happens to lots of dogs as they get older. My friend’s Australian Shepherd/ German Shepherd mix got that way too, where he’d just be walking or laying down and it’d just slip out of him without him realizing it. You can buy doggie diapers, but think about it, with poop, that’s gonna be pretty messy to clean up, especially if he has longer fur because the diaper will make the poop stick to it which yeah, have fun cleaning that lol
Edit: I forgot to mention what my friend did with her incontinent dog. She confined him to an area of the house that didn’t have carpet (tile, hard wood, linoleum, any of those will do) and put a bed in there for him with a washable, removable cover. MUCH easier to clean up then doggie diapers
It is not “normal” for a well trained dog who has been toilet trained for 11 years to start going in the house. If they do, it is a sigh that something is wrong. You don’t mention what breed or mix your dog is. If it is a large breed, then 12 is already very old and the arthritis is painful. I would see your vet and discuss the quality of your dog’s life with him/her. If he is pooping inside for a reason that can be corrected, OK. Also, there are some medications that are inexpensive for arthritis..like Rimadyl..my 15 year old small mix has taken that for over a year and it has helped a lot. But it just may be that your dog is sadly nearing the end of its time. If that is so I hope you have the courage and love to let him go. It is always so sad and I wish you well.
You said his brother passed away 4 years ago. Sounds like this one is ready to join him at the Rainbow Bridge
Be so happy that you got to have him for 4 years longer and do the kindest thing, let him go to be in peace
no your dog is just like you they have emotionial he sounds depressed take him 2 the vet and get antidepressants. they make a very good medication 4 them.dogs usually wont poo where they lay. hes not in a kennel?
Years ago, I had an old dog who had problems, she pooed when she got up after a nap. I never fully resolved this and because she had mobility problems she could not be taken for long walks. In some respects, I started treating her like a puppy. I took her into the garden every hour, sometimes she pooed in the garden and getting her out helped to keep her mobile.
You vet may be able to help with this, if he is a small dog he may have a few years to go. Unfortunately my dog was a GSD, however she managed to cope for two years after she became incontinent.
He may not even realize he’s doing it. If he hasn’t been in for an old-dog check up in the past six months, it would be a good idea to have him in. Tell his vet about the incontinence. Layer newspapers under where he likes to sleep and top the papers with a folded blanket. You should be able to pick up a couple at a thrift store. They don’t need to be new, just washable.
Make sure his nails are getting trimmed. Since he isn’t walking much he isn’t wearing them down. He may get chilled easily so keep him away from drafts. Ask if he can be put on a pain reliever for the arthritis. If he’s moving around better his incontinence may lessen.
My dog, had loss of bladder control two years ago, she was a rescue dog and has been on med for about four years due to arthritis. Two years ago her medication was changed, she was in a bad way, couldn’t hardly walk. The vet took x rays showing that she had severe arthritis in both rear knees and left hip. She has always been a clean dog but had a few accidents at this time, urine, like yours in her bed. This was by night or while I was at work.
She is now doing much better, she is on 2-3 tramadol capsules a day, half a rimdyl, these are for the pain of her legs. She is also on propolin for bladder weakness.
I suggest going to your vet, having a chat and seeing if these meds can make a difference for your dog.
