If you have arthritis in your thumb, is it a good or bad idea to exercise your thumb?
I suspect I mау hаνе arthritis іn mу rіght thumb — аll οf a sudden іt’s steadily painful, bυt I аm οnlу guessing (I hаνе nοt уеt consulted mу doctor). I wonder іf using one οf those hand exercisers wουld bе a helpful thing tο dο, οr wουld іt јυѕt mаkе matters worse? I’m talking аbουt those items уου grip аnd thеn squeeze together.
It’s good to exercise it a little every day, but non-exercise would make it worse. Arthritis is a state coming from in-activity. Activity should help it, but too much activity would be disastrous. As always, if in doubt, consult a real doctor.
Get your doctor to look into it; he/she can suggest exercises or refer you to a hand physiotherapist (yep, there’s enough business for this specialty). In the meantime, you can move your thumb to the limits of your comfort–don’t stress it and don’t ignore it either.
Don’t assume that you have arthritis. There are a couple of other conditions that can cause thumb pain and since you don’t know exactly what you’re suffering from, it’s not a good idea to treat yourself. I work in orthopedics and I can tell you that if it’s arthritis, exercise is a good thing, but it has to be the appropriate type of exercise. If it’s another condition, such as stenosing tenosynovitis or tendinitis, the gripping exercise you’re considering would probably aggravate the condition and cause further inflammation of the nerves and/or tendons. You really should see an orthopedic surgeon to be sure that you’re treated properly.
you could give it a try but then if it hurts bad stop. But i would really go to the doctor
