How can I ease my dogs arthritis without Rx medication?
I hаνе a 9 year οld Rottweiler (named Belle) whο іѕ having ѕοmе trουblе wіth arthritis. Shе іѕ becoming more stiff аѕ thе nights gеt сοldеr, I’m doing whаt I саn fοr hеr. I lеt hеr sleep οn mу bed, аnd οn thе couch whеn ѕhе′s іn thе living room. I аm аlѕο giving hеr Bayer Asprin (I аѕkеd mу vet аbουt thе appropriate dose), bυt ѕhе іѕ still limping a bit through out thе day. Iѕ thеrе anything еlѕе I саn dο thе ease hеr arhritis pain without having tο рυt hеr οn a perscription medication?
There’s many natural alternatives for example deer sinew, deer velvet, glucosamine sulphate and green mussel extract. My dog recovered from limping just 2 weeks after using these supplements. They works because they actually help to repair the painful joints while the vet medicine only relieve the symptoms. I use Hubrihound on my own pooch, she’s still very puppy like while she’s 14, its not a joke! Trust me, try it and see, its much cheaper and more helpful, it does takes a little while yes, just gradually decrease the vet medicine dose while trying out the supplements then stop completely after your dog shows much improvement. Continue the supplement to keep your doggy that way. Make sure your dog is not allergic to any of the supplement ingredients. If in doubt ask your vet, your vet will know the best!
Also a gentle exercise will ease the suffering.
Make sure your dog is lean, to speed up the recovery and put less stress in already painful joints.

Also, supplying a pet heating pad will do a lot to ease the pain, and make getting up and down easier.
Soft comfortable place to sleep, a foot off the floor is most comfortable to get up and down.
Gentle, regular exercise, such as a slow walk around the block.
Diet and Weight control
Older large-breed dogs tend to be overweight. This discourages them from getting the exercise they need and aggravates their arthritis. The more weight on those poor old joints, the harder it is to move around.
whatever you do please do not give her rimadyl. It kills.

I have a 13 yr old chow mix with similar problems. I started feeding her Science Diet J/D a couple years ago & the food, exercise, plus coated aspirin has helped her more than the prescription meds did with less side effects. She’ll never be puppy-like, but she does well keeping up with the rest of our dogs during our 3 mile walks. It’s very important to keep her active even if it’s just a short walk everyday especially with the cold weather coming.

In addition to supplements, mentioned above, change your house and furniture to suit her.
Examples:
Stairs or a ramp up to your bed and the couch.
Raise food bowls to shoulder height, having to lower their heads to eat is sometimes painful.
Get self heating beds/mats. Heat is great for achy bones and muscles.
Use plywood to make stairs into and out of your house shorter. It’s jarring to go up and down tall stairs for potty breaks. ( I hope you understand what I mean, I’m having a hard time explaining. You want the step to be shorter so they don’t have to lift up, or step down from as high as a “standard” step.)

Go to Wal Mart and get some Cosamin DS and some salmon oil capsules.Cosamin is the only glucosamine/chondroitin supplement PROVEN to work.Give the dog three capsules a day for a month,then give one or two a day thereafter.Give the salmon oil, 1- 1000 mg. softgel,three times a day.I would also use Ecotrin(enteric – coated aspirin) instead of plain aspirin,as it is easier on the dog’s belly.Gentle exercise and getting any excess weight off will help as well.Good luck.
my rott has a torn acl muscle and the vet perscibed joint pills 1500 – 2000 mg gullasome close spelling .human pills i buy at costco .there is a pill 1500 mg one pill one a day . some are twice a day too much work for that way. mulan takes that and one bayer everyday she still limps sometimes but not all the time it helps .surgery 50/50 not good odds for help. hope this helps
I give my 11 yr old glucosamine supplements with aspirin (I use Ecotrin…nice coating is easier on stomach ’cause she’ll throw up regular aspirin) on a spoon full of peanut butter…and it helps. You can find them at any pharmacy.

I have a 9 yr old pug/boxer cross that also has arthritis problems. We give him glucosamine with chondroitin and aspirin once a day and it helps immensely. After the first couple doses he was right back to playing and was much happier. He has always had wet food mixed with his dry food so it was easy to hide it. We just got the glucosamine gel-caps that we could pull apart and mixed the powder from one pill as well as half an aspirin dissolved in water with his wet food.
