Dog Arthritis Archives

I think my dog might be getting arthritis, but she’s only two years old. Her back ankles click when she walks and somebody on yahoo said it might be a forerunner to arthritis. If it isn’t would it be bad for her to eat medication treating it?

I was thinking one of these two

How do you care for them (arthritis, slow, doesn’t want to go for walks anymore, loss of your jogging buddy, no energy, losing their senses..)

my rottweiler seems to have developed a little arthritis in his left rear leg.he is almost six years old and is 104 lbs.does anyone know of any type of vitamin i can give him that will not upset his stomach.

I’m looking for help in designing a heated run for my elderly dog.
Betsy is a Corgi / Spaniel cross (she has a thick coat) with hip
displasia and spinal arthritis. She still has a lot of good years left
in her, and I want to keep my faithful companion comfortable. She has
been an indoor dog all her life, but is now having bladder control
problems. A good outdoor run with a heated doghouse seems to be the
answer, but I’m not sure how to heat it safely and effectively. I’m
prepared to pour a concrete pad with a steel or wood fence, and build
her a nice dog house to go into it. It looks like I can put a heat
lamp in the dog house, plus a heated pad in her bed, but is this
enough to keep her as warm as she would be in the house? Is that safe?
Should I also run wires through the concrete to keep it nice and dry?
And if yes, how is this done safely? I have a nice shady and sheltered
location in mind to build this run that would allow her access via a
doggie door into the house when we chose.

i’m currently using Arthrogen plus for dogs for my shelite which was recommended by a breeder. I was wondering if there is something out there that is all natural that is good for arthritis, hip and joint discomfort? just want to use the best and healthiest stuff possible.

Hi, I have a 1 year old spriger spainiel/ lab cross, and she needs surgery for a torn tendon in her hind right knee. I have read some articles, where some say the surgery can prove very painful for the dog afterward, their changes of arthritis increase and in some cases, the dog does better without the surgery ?
Does anyone have any information about this surgery ? Apparently they are going to take the torn tendon out and put in an artificial replacement? Any info with regards to recovery time and sucess rate ?

Thankyou

Not an injury. She has Cushings disease. she is 14 years old, arthritis, etc. right now, she is vomiting, crying (whimpering), won’t eat, but still drinking water.

My bf’s rottie is 11 and she has had surgery to remove a tumor from her spleen in the last year. Since the surgery she has been for the most part..depressed. She has lately had problems walking due to arthritis in her hips and legs. It has gotten to the point where she cannot even walk outside or hold herself up to go to the bathroom. I have to pick her up when he is not home and bring her outside(im pregnant and she weighs 90lbs.) Then when she comes back in from being outside she cant find a comfortable way to lie back down without crying this terrible cry that makes me feel so awful. Everytime she moves she lets out the same cry. The vet said there is nothing they can do but to put her down. My bf has had her the whole 11 yrs so its hard for him to do that. But i think it is best to let her go, the poor thing is so sad and in so much pain. Any suggestions, at least suggestions on what to do for her pain? Thank you.
I thank all of you for your answers. Since i have posted this question, i have called the vet. He will not do anything for the pain! He said that gangrene is setting in and suggests that my bf decide what to do about putting her down. I again thank you all for your comments. They have helped greatly. :(

My dog has considerable arthritis in both elbows due to dysplasia. She weighs 70lbs. She is on pain meds and needs to be on a supplement. However different products recommend different dosages. The one I’m considering getting has 500mg glucosamine, 400mg chondroitin, 100mg MSM, 100mg perna mussel. The one my vet wants to sell me is very expensive and contains 900mg glucosamine, 350mg chondroitin, 800mg MSM. The one i’m considering says one per 75lbs but I was considering doubling it up to get the dosage closer the one the vet recommends and possibly add a MSM or MSM glucosamine capsule if necessary it is also $62 cheaper plus contains perna mussel. There is another that is available from drs foster and smith that contains 1000mg glucosamine, 600mg perna mussel, 1000mg MSM, but contains no chondroitin. What is a theraputic dose and what is overkill?
