I have a 13lb Beagle/Chihuahua mix, even though she’ll be 18 in January, she has been very healthy. However, over the past week or two, she has been showing signs of arthritis. She can’t get up on the couch anymore, or go up the stairs without stopping every few steps.

I know arthritis is common in larger dogs, but I’ve never heard of small dogs developing it.
Should I be worried about this? Could it be a sign of something more serious?

do you think this is a reasonable age to die or should he have lived longer? I feel like I could have done something to prevent the heart disease or help him to live longer – he was on medication and saw a vet regularly for this problem but I didn’t have time to take him on walks plus he had arthritis so he had stopped “running” outside in the yard. poor old Angus!

His regular vet has been treating him for 2 months with pain medication, (it does not seem to be working) they did blood work, checked organs, took x rays, they cant find anything that would explain the kind of pain my dog is expressing. He does have mild arthritis (mild for a 10.5 year old dog) His organs are perfect, no tumors, no Hip dysplasia we took him to an orthopedic surgeon, they also could not find the source of his pain, but recommended we take him to a Neurologist (have an appointment for 8/25) He has NO other symptoms, no limp, eating fine, the only changes in his behavior are the crying when laying down, he paces around the house ALOT. Does anyone have any idea what this could be???
He had a full work up, was checked for lymes, RMSF.. everything. He does not have arthritis in his feet. (Knees and ankels only)
He is a Weimeranier (100 lbs) he’s a very big boy for his breed, has had medical problems since birth (cancer at 3 months, right up to a torn ACL 1.5 years ago) But he is a GREAT dog, and I love him dearly – I was hoping someone had experience with this before…. I think its his back…. slip disk or something… but aparantly that does not show up on an x ray — the Neurologist will need to do an MRI to prove or disprove that….

also – i dont care about cost…. I love my baby…. any help is appreciated
Thanks

now the vet said we should get surgery but the problem is it costs $1,000 per leg which is a huge amount of money! is it even necessary to get it done?
the last thing i want is for my dog to grow older and get bad arthritis so she cant walk and its too late for surgery =(
advice pleaso
also i dont want to put my dog through the pain of a surgery if its unnecessary as my dogs a sookie baby!

My family is really active, we hike and jog regularly. We are used to bringing our dog, but the past couple of years it seems like we are carrying her more and more (we use a baby carrier on the longer hikes, she actually likes that!!) I know she is old (please nobody has to point that one out) and the vet says she is very healthy, not overweight or underweight, no arthritis or anything. Does anyone have experience with this? How long of a walk is good for her? I think that sometimes she just stops walking because she knows I’ll pick her up (she’s a bit spoiled, but she should be!!)

Anything to make it easier? Any insight? It is tearing me up inside.
My german shepard dog is 11 yrs old, and has arthritis….lately his legs have been very wobbly, he is having trouble with the steps and standing up, he is also loosing his bowels(which shows that he is numb in the hind area), he also drags his back feet, and walks on his knuckles in the back.
I have gone back and forth with whether or not to do it, he doesn’t cry in pain or anything. But lately he has been sleeping alot and just looks worn out…..but on the other hand he has the mind of a puppy and will still play to a certain extent! I guess I am just looking for help, support, insight of the whole thing.
Another reason I would do it know is b/c the arthritis has already progressed and we have seen it happen fast, I don’t want to wait until he is in obvious pain. We have an appointment tomorrow to have him put to sleep but the doctor is going to examine him first………….thank you
My husband can barely take him, and I know I cant….I am balling now….he was going to have his mother take him, but I rather him or me take him he we have had him for 10 yrs, and I want him to be comfortable with us there……but I dunno if I can even go there
ITs not any easier either b/c we have a 3 month old son, that I wanted him to really know the dog….right before my son was born we thought the dog was a goner and he came right back around…..
Susanna…….its terrible, I am crying too. Its soo hard to watch him go downhill, but his mind is still young, and he still wants to play with me even if he is in pain!

I have a 6 year old Golden Retriever mix and she has just recently started going gray around her snout. It’s a pretty good patch under her chin and around her nose. One of my friends told me this could be a sign of illness but I have never heard of this and nothing turned up when I searched for info on such a thing.

My dog is decently healthy. She does have arthritis and a heart murmur but she has recently gotten down to a very healthy weight and she is a very happy girl. She will be going to her vet in a month for a checkup regarding some changes we’ve made with regards to her arthritis and the heart so I’ll be sure to mention the graying to the vet but I just wanted to see if anyone had ever heard of a graying muzzle being related to illness. I still consider her a young dog.

Thanks in advance.
