Arthritis Diet Archives

There’s nothing whatever the matter with me…
I’m just as healthy as can be.
I have arthritis in both of my knees,
And when I talk,I talk with a wheeze.
My pulse is weak and my blood is thin,
But I’m awfully well for the shape I’m in!

My teeth eventually have to come out,
And my diet I hate to think about.
I’m overweight and I can’t get thin,
But I’m awfully well for the shape I’m in.

Arch supports I have for my feet,
Or I wouldn’t be able to walk on the street.
Sleep is denied me every night,
And every morning I’m a sight.
My memory is failing,my head’s in a spin,
I’m practically living on aspirin,
But I’m awfully well for the shape I’m in.

The moral is as this tale unfold,
That for you and me who are growing old;
It’s better to say,”I’m fine” with a grin,
Then to let them know the shape we’re in.

How do I know my youth has been spent?
Because my get-up-and go has got-up-and-went!
But in spite of all that-I’m able to grin,
When I think of where my get-up-and-go has been.

Old age is “Golden” I’ve heard it said,
But sometimes I wonder as I go to bed-
My ears in a drawer,my teeth in a cup,
My eyes on the table until I get up…

‘Ere sleep dims my eyes as I say to myself,
“Self,is there anything else I should lay on the shelf?”
But I’m happy to say as I close my eyes,
My friends are the same as days gone by.

When I was young my slippers were red,
I could kick my heels straight over my head.
When I grew older,my slippers were blue,
But I still could kick/dance the whole night through.

Now I’m old,my slippers are black;
I walk to the corner and puff my way back.
The reason I know my youth has been spent,
But I really don’t mind when I think with a grin,
Of all the places my get-up has been!

28% of Americans are obese. That is about one third of population. One third of population can’t obese just by over eating. If not only that than what is it? The leading causes of obesity, disincluding over eating, are: lack of exercise, family history of obesity, stress, peer or family problems, medical illnesses, and depression. Although certain medical disorders can cause obesity, less than one percent of all obesity is caused by physical problems. But sadly, we have come to know that the leading cause of obesity is soft drink consumption. Yes, a diet coke will finally make you fat. But all jokes aside, the progressing rate of obesity is serious and is estimated be 33% by 2010.
There are many risks and complications with obesity. The physical consequences are severe and life threatening. There is an increased risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, breathing problems, premature death, stroke, cancer, fatty liver disease, gallbladder disease, arthritis, and many more. And that’s just touching the tip of ice berg, because adults who are obese may be cutting about three years off their lives, mostly from heart disease and stroke. Those who are morbidly obese, about 100 or more pounds over a healthy weight, could be shortening their lives by as many as 10 years. Being morbidly obese has the similar effect of lifelong smoking.
One very sad thing that I have found in my research is that in Mississippi, an actual bill has been proposed to allow restaurants to not serve obese people. A weigh scale will be used to determine the potential customer’s body mass index, or BMI, and if it is too high, they refuse to serve them or the owner of the food establishment will have their business permits revoked. If this bill is passed, then there will be BMI scales outside of every restaurant, and there will be records of the eligible patrons BMIs. Apparent discrimination the obese has been documented in three specific areas: education, health care, and employment. For example, 28% of teachers in a study done by the Weight Management and Obese Symposium said that becoming obese is the worst thing that can happen to a person. 24% of nurses said they are ‘repulsed’ by obese people, and, controlling for income and grades, parents provide less college support for their overweight children than for their thin children.

How do I end my essay?
P.S. This is three paragraphs. Yahoo Answers doesn’t allow you to tab. And this is just a rough draft of my body. There wasn’t enough space for the introduction. *sniff* Meany faces say bad things
Also, disincluding is a word. Look it up on Google.

To clarify a little about my situation..I have read a few similar questions on this subject and there are equal no’s to yes’s. So i guess I’m not looking for guesses or answers from anyone who thinks they know the answer. I would like a Vets opinion, or someone who is 100% sure as they have researched this as well.

Now I keep a dish of fresh dog food out for my pup every day I am currently using science diet as she didn’t seem to take to Purina puppy chow. I also have a 17yr old cat who I believe has arthritis, although my vet said she looks fine I see her every day and have loved and nurtured her for 17 yrs and can see a difference in her walk/run. So i don’t want to change her eating area to somewhere she’d have to jump or get to higher area. I have tried pulling the dry cat food off the floor when shes not eating but i really hate that she cant get to her food when she wants it. Even when i did this the puppy will walk right up to the food after i put it down while my cat is eating and steal food.

Now Chloe (the yorkie) is only a little over 10wks old, And is tiny. She is just over 1.6pounds. I do not want to do anything to effect her growth/health..But at the same time I hardly ever she her eating other than a nibble here and there so I don’t want to discourage her from doing so period.

So is it really a big deal that she is eating dry cat food as well as nibbling on her own dry or no?

Thank you so much in advance for your expert advise.
Thank you everyone for the advise I will definitely be implementing a feeding schedule, and get better food now that i’m aware. The S.D and purina were free bags from the breeder. I also will be ensuring she does not get a hold of the cat food. I want only what is best for her. But I would like to comment to Maltese momma, that #1 you really shouldn’t bother giving advise if your going to be rude about it. That is the reason people ask questions in life, because they don’t know the answer and want to learn, you knowing the answer doesn’t make you better than them. #2 the time frame that you can separate a pup from the litter/mom is 8-12wks! Ive verified this with a few vets.12 Wks would be better for social development but is not necessary.#3 The father only weighed 4 lbs as an adult of 5 yrs. and the mother was only 6lbs at 3yrs old. and there both purebred with papers.. .So shes almost half the weight of her father at almost 11wks, shes not a little runt ,And id love her if she was!

I’m 14, soon to be 15 in June. I am 5ft 6 and 1 half inches tall. I weigh 148-150 lbs. That is about 10-12 over weight according to my BMI.

From the middle of the last school year and all summer I was in and out of the hospital for being low on energy and having problems sleeping (which still happens on and off). In July I had an ultrasound on my kidneys done and discovered my kidneys sometimes throw up things my body needs such as protein. So my skin, hair and nails aren’t as healthy as they should be. I have to take more time with grooming than most people. I’m now a Freshman and I think this has gone on for much to long.
Most of my family has a history of high blood pressure, arthritis, heart problems and cancer. I’d like to live a long life. My family is big on meat, such as chicken, beef and fish. We don’t eat pork because my father has heart troubles and takes medication to control it, so we use turkey products as a substitute.

I have read many things online such as the 57 benefits of going vegetarian/vegan and I would like to give this a try so my health now and in the future will improve, especially as a person who is not very active.
Unfortunately with my family so big on meat and I’m not sure how they will react to my sudden change in attitude. I don’t know how I will explain this to them, how to gradually change, or how to eat properly with the idea of this new diet.

Answers are appreciated as long as you understand that this is a serious topic for me. Thank you.
(P.s. Sorry for such a long paragraph orz;;)
I have been tested for cancer and my doctor say that I’m healthy and cancer has yet to be spotted anytime soon.
But when my kidney’s were tested with urine samples it showed that only once a day in the morning before I eat my kidneys are most prone to throwing out protein. During the rest of the day they don’t. Also my kidney doctor said he heard a mummer under coming from the area near my kidneys and said that is it possible that one of the tubes leading to my kidneys may be becoming to narrow. He said this is is mostly found in people with a thin body type such as mine.
So he recommended a low sodium diet for my to follow to see if it would have any effects on my blood pressure.
To Lrrr, thanks for such a long, edited post it actually does help. But I am not fully Caucasian or African American. I am a mixture of both. I thought this bit of information might help because you mentioned hemachromatosis in Caucasians.
To Lrrr, yes I do have northern European ancestors on my mothers side.

Dear friends,

Our beloved FOXIE, was recently diagnosed with CRF and the prognosis seems to be poor. We are willing to do everything we can to save our little Foxie!!

Is she in the final stage? We got the diagnosis just 10 days ago, but today when I have learnt about CRF, I think there were signs already during the summer. Her way of movement was stiff and Foxie doesn’t really like to be caressed over her back – probably bone pain….
I thought it was arthritis, but the vet examined her and found no such evidence. Unfortunately, no blood test was done.

We estimate Foxie’s age to something between 4-8 years old.

Her test result:
Creatinine 954
Urea high 41
Phosphate high 4.3
Blood pressure high 170
HCT 19.2%

The ultrasound shows that the kidneys are damaged, but to our veterinarian’s surprise, they looked better than expected with a crea of 950. A urine test tells us the concentration is ok. However, I don’t think he did a urine culture.

She is eating every day, not so much, but app 60 g of wetfood per day. We give special diet, but also normal food. Anything to make her eat!! Foxie weighs 3.8 kg today. She weight 4.1 kg one month ago.

Foxie has been given intravenous fluids 200-350 ml per day for 8 days now, she is also medicating for high blood pressure, Norvasc 5mg Amiodipin 1/4 of tablett per day, and Renalzin (phosphate binder).

After 7 days on fluids and medicine, the latest test results show no change….I think she is getting weaker every day, Her appetite is reduced and she sleeps most. It breaks my heart to see her like this.

Is there anything more to do? Any new treatments? Any other medicines we should give her? Should we continue with the daily intravenous fluids? We don’t medicate for the anemia, even though it is very low. Do you think we should and how?

Do you think medicine for anemia can help? Antibiotics? Or is it time to say goodbye, until we meet again…We don’t want her to have a miserable life.

We are willing to do everything to help Foxie and would be so grateful for your advice.

Annette, Mike & Foxie

No, not a 7 month old puppy, not a hound from europe or Texas, not an active wet dog from the carolina’s, not a dog that hasn’t been thought over… I have a 12 lb 12 year old dog. No arthritis, no leaving him at home for 4 hours in the afternoon, no aggression towards other dogs on the street, and I’m trying to find him the best dog food and more. His teeth are white, he still has his fur and he’s not violent. He doesn’t have blue cataracts or anything, but I’m still wondering whether to go organic, go by the word ’substantiated’ or something else. I don’t need to know anything on homemade meals, dangerous foods, lack of appetite or anything. And I don’t need somebody to go about my budget right now, nor will I mark points for someone who tells me to get some Walmart brands, not necessarily a Walmart brand. And I don’t just want a response saying: get a senior food, just to be on the safe side. Here’s what I notice: he never really liked Iams, most Eagle Pack kinds, Eukanuba, dog chow, and such. Once I gave him Iams or something, and he threw up beet pulp. Like some gel potato or bread maybe, I knew it was beet pulp. Either way, he threw them all up in the same time each. Mostly I just want to know a dog food that’s better than one of the Wellness Super 5 mixes. You can even tell me which of the Super 5 mixes is the healthiest for them, if you are sure. I still do not see something like N- acetyl-carnosine eye drops today at Walmart or the like, anyway. I once bought treats with L-Carnitine at least. Didn’t do anything. I once had him on Authority regular in the past. Despite the L Ascorbyl 2 Polyphosphate and more, he was sensitive to the corn gluten meal. I checked to be sure with other dog foods. He’s mostly on Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul Adult. Dogswell is out there, with Halo, By Nature canned, Azmira maybe, Canidae certainly, only 1 kind of Hills Science Diet is good but perhaps $28 instead of the usual 7-9, and who knows about the red bag of Newman kind? That sounds good too, perhaps, but with beet pulp once again. The only thing that’s changed about him is: until about a week ago, he’d tell me when he wanted something. Now he lays down until you ask him. Thankfully he can hear, doesn’t have hip dysplaysia, the worms or anything. I don’t know what the story is. I think I lost track a bit of what I wanted to ask here. What’s simply a good dog food to stop fleas? I know we’re meant to have 1 more Frontline Plus packet left for him and can’t find it.

I have 3 cats, one is slim and very active, one has arthritis so is a little chubby but nothing to worry about and the other one is very very fat!
I have moved out of my house so my mum is now looking after them. I recently went to visit and the cat has got even fatter! She is really very fat… I want to take her to my house to look after her but I have a puppy and they really don’t get on.
I don’t think my mum has too much time for them so I want to tell her exactly what she needs to do and make it easy so the cat starts losing weight.
The main problem is that when the other cats are fed the fat one eats all their food. It is very easy to say to feed them separately but the other cats are very independent and aren’t always at home whereas the fat one is always lying around waiting for food.
Can anyone recommend a good way of sorting this problem, also can you recommend some high quality diet food for cats?

Thanks very much!

I have multiple questions within a question…sorry…but they all pertain to the same issue. I have a great dog that is like a lot of others and unfortunately…has allergies. I am looking for the opinion of vet techs, and past experience, tidbits of wisdom – whatever you want to call it :)

After much trial and error, it has been determined that Bear is allergic to wheat, corn, beef, soy, rice and possibly chicken. (I have to retry the chicken diet without the rice) With these allergies, is the chance of having an allergy to yeast pretty high? He is currently on Natural Balance Venison & Sweet Potato and according to other research I have done, potatoes should be avoided in dogs with arthritis – WELL – he is a big dog and don’t want to feed him something that will eventually hurt him more in the end. My other dog, Tanner, is already showing signs at 7 years old of stiffness in the morning…

Bear is also allergic to flea bites AND flea medicine (Revolution, Advantage and Frontline – I have not yet tried the new pill that starts with an S? If you have any experience with that – I would love to hear about it) I thus want to try a more natural approach. I am willing to try Apple Cider Vinegar in the water and sponge baths for them, but dogs that have a sensitivity to yeast obviously have a reaction to ACV. Thus the yeast question :) I also use Dawn Original for his monthly bath but have started using a new product in my kitchen for soap called Seventh Generation. In my research about fleas – they dislike certain herbs and smells and the new soap I am using is Lavender and Mint – both said to “deter” fleas. Below is the ingredient list – would this work to bathe the dogs? Dawn works great, but no smell is left behind and maybe this would work better…however…I have also heard that essential oils can be toxic to dogs…what about cats?

Dishwashing Liquid, Lavender Floral & Mint
Aqua (water), sodium laureth sulfate, cocamidopropyl betaine, cocamide MEA and coceth-7 (plant-derived cleaning agents), sodium chloride (thickener), magnesium chloride (cleaning enhancer), citric acid (cornstarch-derived water softener), essential oils and botanical extracts* (citrus aurantifolia (lime), lavendula angustifolia (lavender), mentha spicata (spearmint), mentha piperita (peppermint), cananga odorata (ylang ylang)), hexahydro-1,3,5-tris (2-hydroxyethyl)-s-triazine (preservative, less than 0.05%). *d-limonene is a naturally occurring component of these ingredients. (http://www.seventhgeneration.com/Dishwas…

I have also heard of garlic in their food but I am concerned due to the negative responses about garlic being toxic as well…Is it toxic for dogs? for cats? both??

I have a zoo and I want to be the best Mom I can be…so I would love to hear the opinions, advice, past experiences…stories…ANYTHING!

Thank you for reading and taking the time to answer – I truly appreciate the help! THANKS AGAIN!

Thanks for the answers.

Bear is a long hair, but like Rottie type hair – long but not fluffy!

I AM using DE for the yard and carpets as part of the maitenance – I meant to include that information :)
And yes – we flea comb, vacuum and run stuff through the dryer everyday during the “flea season.” We keep our house cold enough in the winter that we do not seem to have issues. The summers are AWFUL though!
Thank you Jill! This testing was all done by me and trial and error. I have not been able to find a highly recommended Animal Allergist in the Portland area thus the not being tested! I was hoping he was going to be a “simple” case lol I will do some research on Spectrum Labs as well as Comfortis – THANKS AGAIN!
I would love to have some more answers please!

I try to walk every day, & go to the gym—just started getting pain in my left arm (arthritis probably), so I slowed down on my weight training the last couple of weeks. So now I walk more to try to burn calories. I’m not a big eater, but over 35, and I cannot lose weight anymore. Slim Fast worked great, but their new recipe is disgusting, I can’t drink it. Has anyone had result with a caffeine free diet supplemant, like Hydroxycut? I work full time, and have only limited time at night to work out. Running gives me awful shin splints. Help!
