Can arthritis be the cause of swollen feet and ankles?
Just curious..
I just had xrays that show arthritis in the ankles..
I don’t have pain at the moment, I rarely do?.. Only when I’d land on it wrong really.. But I have had swelling of the feet and ankles in the summer ever since I quit smoking and gained weight.
Does arthritis cause swollen feet and ankles, even if there is no pain present?
You are speaking of edema with the swollen feet and ankles. They may be symptomatic, or have a different cause entirely. For some reason you are retaining water. First see your doctor. In the meantime quit drinking sodas and drink large quantities of water. This helps the body get rid of the excess water. Sudden weight gain can also cause this problem. I have this same problem and the doctor put me on diuretics. My feet had swollen up so much that I could not get my shoes on. I am happy to report that after one week my feet have stopped swelling and have gone down.
Absolutely! Arthritis can cause swelling in the feet as well as the ankles. Especially if the Xrays show that you have arthritis in your ankles. If you notice that the swelling goes up and down with a change in weather, then this is a sure sign of arthritis.
Unfortunately there is no cure for arthritis, but you can take anti-inflammatories, like Motrin, or Aleve or even Celebrex.
If the swelling continues and your ankles start to be swollen all the time, and they become painful, the cause is most likely not arthritis. It maybe related to your circulation; either your venous circulation or your arterial circulation. Don’t let swelling go on for more than 2 days. Make sure you see your Primary Care Physician right away.
