Can anything be done about knee arthritis for an athletic teenager?
Sο, mу 17 year οld daughter, whο hаѕ bееn playing basketball fοr 10 years. Shе іѕ 6’1″ аnd аbουt 200 lbs. Shе′s bееn having problems wіth hеr knees swelling аnd a lot οf pain. Well, I took hеr up tο U οf M tο see аn orthopedic surgeon whο requested аn MRI fοr hеr knees. Thе next day ѕhе called tο ѕау thаt mу daughter hаѕ arthritis аnd thаt nothing сουld bе done аbουt іt. Cаn thіѕ bе trυе? Shе really wаntѕ tο continue playing basketball whеn ѕhе goes tο college, bυt thе pain іѕ getting worse. Dοеѕ anyone hаνе аnу suggestions tο hеlр out аn athlete?
I would suggest Celebrex – its really good (i have 8 fractures in my leg and it has helped a lot with pain) and its anti-inflammatory arthritis med.
I too was athletic back then and arthritic….
These days there should be something they can do? Get a second opinion if that is she wants to continue with her sports. I had to give up track and I was very good at it (held up the number one spot all through in middle school and was told it was still there when I graduated, lettered my freshmen year). Do not give up!! There has to be something better these days that can be done!!

I have very painful arthritis in my hands and feet. My most painful joint is in my left thumb. I have cortisone injections into the joints. First time I had it done I cried all the way home. The pain went from the tips of my fingers all the way up to my neck. This lasted about 3 hours then after that I get at least 6 months relief. The cure is worse than the complaint but not for long. It is well worth it. I dont know whether this will help your daughter but it might be worth asking the doctor. If the pain is really bad it might be worth a try.
I am an extremely active person too. Arthritis runs in my family and so do shin splints. I have had shin splints so severe that they were sensitive to heat. I would be taking a shower with my girlfriend and I would just collapse because I felt as if my shins were going to snap.
What helped me were a few things. I drank a LOT of milk. Also, I take something called glucosamine with chondroitin. They are vitamins and they worked extremely well for me.
Also, Knox gelatin is known to help out and also there is this oriental stuff called agar agar that helps too.

one thing i know works wonders on joints is Glucosamine. it can help to rebuild joint cartilage which is one of the main problems.
some people believe it does little or nothing, but from my experience and people i know with joint problems who take it say it works. i think it depends on each brand and their source. i know the one i use works as i am a state level cross country runner and it helps me, it also worked wonders when i split my knuckle joint straight down the middle. though but i cannot be sure about other brands.
