Do you know what the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, or NICE, in the UK is? Like the governmental committee to make ‘recommendations’ on care and best practices in Obamacare, NICE was originally set up just to advise on best practices, but mutated.

“What NICE has become in practice is a rationing board. As health costs have exploded in Britain as in most developed countries, NICE has become the heavy that reduces spending by limiting the treatments that 61 million citizens are allowed to receive through the NHS. For example:

In March, NICE ruled against the use of two drugs, Lapatinib and Sutent, that prolong the life of those with certain forms of breast and stomach cancer. This followed on a 2008 ruling against drugs — including Sutent, which costs about $50,000 — that would help terminally ill kidney-cancer patients. After last year’s ruling, Peter Littlejohns, NICE’s clinical and public health director, noted that “there is a limited pot of money,” that the drugs were of “marginal benefit at quite often an extreme cost,” and the money might be better spent elsewhere.

In 2007, the board restricted access to two drugs for macular degeneration, a cause of blindness. The drug Macugen was blocked outright. The other, Lucentis, was limited to a particular category of individuals with the disease, restricting it to about one in five sufferers. Even then, the drug was only approved for use in one eye, meaning those lucky enough to get it would still go blind in the other. As Andrew Dillon, the chief executive of NICE, explained at the time: “When treatments are very expensive, we have to use them where they give the most benefit to patients.”

NICE has limited the use of Alzheimer’s drugs, including Aricept, for patients in the early stages of the disease. Doctors in the U.K. argued vociferously that the most effective way to slow the progress of the disease is to give drugs at the first sign of dementia. NICE ruled the drugs were not “cost effective” in early stages.

Other NICE rulings include the rejection of Kineret, a drug for rheumatoid arthritis; Avonex, which reduces the relapse rate in patients with multiple sclerosis; and lenalidomide, which fights multiple myeloma. Private U.S. insurers often cover all, or at least portions, of the cost of many of these NICE-denied drugs.

NICE has also produced guidance that restrains certain surgical operations and treatments. NICE has restrictions on fertility treatments, as well as on procedures for back pain, including surgeries and steroid injections. The U.K. has recently been absorbed by the cases of several young women who developed cervical cancer after being denied pap smears by a related health authority, the Cervical Screening Programme, which in order to reduce government health-care spending has refused the screens to women under age 25.
Sound good to you?

Doesn’t sound good to me.
Sunshine he said 2/3 not 1/3 and since he is ADDING huge committee and oversight structures and keeping insurance involved as well, there is no savings. That is the problem the CBO had with it. It doesn’t cut costs. So to take the money from medicare means cutting service.

My dog has a very painful back leg in the joint which the vet prescribed metacam for, which hasnt worked in the slightest. We have also tried Cortaflex which didnt work. All the sites Ive found on metacam say its for arthritis which my dog hasnt got.

They believe that I have had Lupus since 2002, It attacks my joints giving me the same symptoms as a sever arthritis. Some days I can barely walk or hold a hair brush it hurts so badly. I am currently collecting unemployment but finding a job that fits my ability is very rare. What should I do for further medical assistance? What should I do for a job? I am very scared that I might have a advanced stage of Lupus… Positive answers Please

My 14yr old cat has had episodes of mobility problems for the past few years, the vet tells me its just arthritis. However I live in a country where the vets are only used to treating horses, so I’m not too confident, and I dont have any alternative vets to consult, so PLEASE help!
In the latest episode, she has had 1 dose of a long acting steroid (depo?) each month for 3 months. I’ve had all the blood tests, and everything is fine, I had xrays done, initally they told me she had a broken hip, but apprenetly it turned out that its a normal feature in an Xray of a cat if the cat is not positoned just right…
Now for the last two days she has started walking diagonally rather than staright and she seems to twist her body more when she walks. She’s also had her first ever ear problems recently, I know this can affect balence, I’m just stuck with not knowing what to do…
Can someone please give me some advice, I hate to see her suffer! I just wish I could get her to a vet that could

My dog has horrible arthritis in her legs, and my vet said I should give her massage on the legs (but no pushing on her legs hard or anything). Would anyone possible know a good way to massage a dogs legs without having to really push down on them?

Good Morning,Last night my cat died. I don’t know how old she was, because we found her. About a year ago, she started developing symptoms that seen like arthritis, she could no longer jump up on the bed or chair. But she was still happy, eating and playing. Last night she let out this terrible cry, started stumbling like her back legs gave out, then it looked she had a seizure her whole body started shaking and her mouth sagged on 1 side then she could not move , as if she was paralyzed, she could not even lift her head, ,we made her comfortable waiting for a vet to open in our area, she was 3am , then suddenly she gasped twice for air and then died. Please help me to figure out what happened to my cat or could she have been saved if there was emergency services for animals open? Also my 2 children are devastated as well as myself and my husband should we get a kitten to help with the pain?

I asked this question before but now I have details.
I talked to the fed Dr and he stated that the ONLY reason why I was denied Employment is b/c I have a perscription for Indocin. There are NO side effects, in fact the only reason why my doctor gave it to me is so I don’t have to buy advil OTC (the same thing!).
So if I didn’t accept the script, I would have had a job.
THe reason for using the med is b/c I was diagnosed with ankolosing spondilitis, a form of arthritis but seriously, I am doing great, no pain, no limited ROM. It is just that I carry a gene and a certain blood test that stated I have this. It’s a fairly new disease and there are a lot of treatments so I’m not understanding.
I even had another exam by my rhumatologist who states that I am very healthy and able to perform anything they require (there was a list she had to go through)
Then I went to my general Dr. and she said the same. In fact, they are both really confused on this!
Any advice? How frustrating
I was assuming it was the arthritis, I wasn’t sure.
Now that I tak]lked to the fed Dr. personally just yesterday, he stated that it’s the med.
Further, he said that if I have that med, I must have pain which is not the case.
sorry for the confusion
Also, I have been examed by their dr. as well as 2 of mine.

8 weeks ago, my 7 year old Dachshund/Spaniel mix started limping on her right hind leg. We brought her to the vet and he checked her out. He diagnosed her with a shifting Meniscus.
He said for some reason the muscles in her back leg are very lax which is allowing the Meniscus to shift out of place. But he made it clear that there is absolutely nothing wrong with any of the bones in the leg. Her kneecap is very stable and there is no erosion or arthritis.
My dog seemed to be in a lot of pain, but he assured me that she was just being a typical “Drama Queen” Dachshund and it wasn’t all that bad. The vet then manipulated the leg and popped the Meniscus back in place and gave her an anti-inflammatory injection. He said give her a few weeks of rest, no going up and down stairs, etc. and she would be right as rain.
The first few weeks she was back to her old self. But recently, she has started limping again. Should I continue resting her for another few weeks and see if it improves? Or should I bring her back into the vet to make sure that something else isn’t going on?
Thanks!

Heavy metal poisoning has become an increasingly major health problem, especially since the industrial revolution. Heavy metals are in the water we drink, the foods we eat, the air we breathe, our daily household cleaners, our cookware and our other daily tools. A heavy metal has a density at least 5 times that of water and cannot be metabolized by the body, therefore accumulating in the body. Heavy metal toxicity can cause our mental functions, energy, nervous system, kidneys, lungs and other organ functions to decline. Learning where these metals can be found and decreasing one’s exposure is vital to staying healthy. For the person who wonders if they have heavy metal poisoning, testing is essential. If a person has heavy metal toxicity then interventional natural medicine procedures need to be performed.
